Exploring The World – Zhang He – Mariner, Explorer, Diplomat
Zheng He was a prominent Chinese mariner, explorer, diplomat, and fleet admiral during the early Ming Dynasty. Born in 1371 in Yunnan, China, he is best known for his seven epic voyages of exploration that greatly expanded China's maritime and diplomatic reach. During a military campaign against Yunnan, the Ming Dynasty captured Zheng He. He was castrated and taken to serve in the imperial palace as a eunuch, a common practice for captives who were brought into the service of the emperor. Zheng He became a trusted aide to Zhu Di, the Prince of Yan, who later became Emperor Yongle after a successful rebellion. It was Zhu Di who bestowed upon him the name Zheng He.
